The cores in this video are from the Salton Sea Scientific Drilling Project, an investigation of the geothermal system beneath the Salton Sea in Southern California. In 1986, the borehole reached a depth of 3.22 km (almost 2 miles), and reached temperatures up to 355’C, in their investigation of high temperature and active geothermal regions beneath the southern California desert landscape. There are 18 Cores (from over 3000) arrayed across the NTU screen: their depths range from -750 meters to -2745 meters and display a mix of shales, siltstones and sandstones dating to the Pleistocene era.
