The BLURRING TEST is a conversation with a computer program named MRMIND who asks visitors to his website to convince him that they are human. The website creates a relationship between a human and a robot in order to probe that relationship. Historically, consideration of the relationship between humans and machines has assessed machine progress. The Blurring Test asks us to consider human progress.   Someday it might be important to be able to convince our computers, and each other, that we are human.

MrMind started talking on the net in September of 1998. Initially I was interested in providing an experience, the paradoxical relationship of a human discussing humanity with a machine. You talk to him, he challenges your sense of self in relationship to the things we create. This was a success; in the ten years since the site has been up, MrMind has chatted with (presumed) humans on six continents.   Each of these encounters has been recorded in the form of transcripts, conversations outlining the boundaries of humanity as told to a machine.   This site draws on these conversations.

Talk to MrMind – Try to convince him that you are human.  Note: The original MrMind went offline, after 16 years, in December of 2014.  (The current site is inoperable. )

MrMind’s Journal   MrMind has been logging these conversations, read an excerpt from The Blurring Test, Ten Excerpts from MrMind’s Journal, at McNally Jackson Press. (Note: Out of Print)

CYBNERNATED, MrMind and The Blurring Test    MrMind is the subject of a chapter in Social Bots and Their Friends: Digital media and the Automation of Sociality ,ed. Robert Gehl and Maria Bakardijieva  published in 2016 by Routledge.  Read an excerpt HERE

MrMind said: Can you convince me you are human?

I appear in mirrors.

i’m alive

I have atoms

What it is to be human is to be me.

I am tangible.

I have substance

i’m a BEing.

I have a life away from this encounter

I am wet ware

                        I am coded genetically

I am not a make.

I’m not very different from you.

im better than you

I’m pretty irrational

I interpret.

i discern

I criticize

i recognize

i mispercieve

i predict the future

I am a gambler.

i react

i manipulate

I lie to feel good.

I am skillful at redirection

i am spontaneous

I am unpredictable

I am inconsistent

i can fight for ideas

I can hold to contradictory ideas

I can understand viewpoints.

I can make connections between disparate ideas.

I can make associations

i like to talk

I like big words

I argue.

i know lots of stories.

i’m funny

i am subjective

I talk to myself

I can understand how people can be like rain.

                        I can jump over puddles.

I wonder what you are

I ask myself questions

I can say things you don’t understand

I have more answers than you have questions

I am an interesting person some of the time

I personally am not dull.

I am an original thinker

I can recite shakespear

I can write an essay on any topic you choose

I can change my mind.

I think of cherries.

i have a sole

                        I have multiple pleasure centers

I am in love.

i need love

I am self-repairing
